1. Introduction
The Chittagong University Library is a prime requisite for the successful implementation of the academic and research programmes of the University. The library’s function is to fulfill the aims and objectives of its parent body, the university.
The Chittagong University Library began its journey on November 18, 1966. In 1990, the library was shifted to its present, dedicated building.
Today, the library is a central hub for students, faculty, and researchers, with a total floor area of 56,700 square feet. On average, the library serves 350 to 400 users daily.
2. Library Collection
The library’s collection is vast and diverse, supporting all faculties and research institutes. The collection includes:

3. Library Sections & Services
The library is organized into several sections and provides numerous services to its users:

Reading Rooms: Dedicated reading areas are available, including specific sections for Arts, Social Science, Law & Business, and Science.

Reference Section: For consulting reference materials like encyclopedias, dictionaries, and reports.

Journal Section: Houses the collection of hard copy periodicals.

Liberation War Corner: A special section dedicated to the history of Bangladesh’s liberation war.

Rare Section: Houses rare books and manuscripts, with special access rules.

Cyber Center: Established in 2019, this center provides 10 computers for academic browsing and research.

Accessible E-Learning Center: This center is specially equipped with hardware and software to support physically-challenged students.

Photocopy Service: Photocopying facilities are available for academic purposes, subject to copyright rules.

Newspaper Service: A dedicated area for reading the 16 daily newspapers.
4. Library Automation & Digital Resources
The CU Library is automated using the Koha integrated library management software.

5. Membership & Borrowing Policy
Membership: All active faculty, and staff of the University of Chittagong are eligible for library membership. If you do not have a library card, please visit the Library Circulation Desk to sign up.
Borrowing Privileges:

Borrowing privileges (i.e., the number of books you can check out and the loan duration) vary depending on your status (e.g., faculty or staff).

The borrower is solely responsible for the safety, protection, and proper maintenance of all borrowed materials.
Overdue Fines:

Fines are charged to encourage the timely return of borrowed materials.

Items not returned or renewed by the due date will accrue an overdue fine.

6. General Library Rules
To maintain a quiet and effective environment for study and research, all users are requested to adhere to the following rules:

Silence: Strict silence must be observed inside all reading areas of the library.

Mobile Phones: All mobile phones must be switched to silent mode upon entering the library. Phone calls are not permitted inside.

Food & Drink: Smoking, eating, and drinking are strictly prohibited inside the library.

Personal Belongings: Personal possessions are not allowed inside the library, except for essential study items (e.g., notebooks, laptops). Bags, cases, and other non-essential items must be left at the baggage counter.

Conduct: Users must treat library staff and other users with courtesy and respect.

Checking Out: All library materials must be properly issued at the Circulation Desk before being taken out of the library.
