🖥️ Setup Guide for PC (Windows / macOS)

Step 1: Install Tailscale

1. Download the Tailscale installer for your operating system from the official website (tailscale.com/download).
2. Run the installer and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.

Step 2: Connect to the University Server

Because you are using a private university server instead of the public Tailscale network, you must log in via the command line or terminal.

• Windows: Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run:

tailscale login –login-server https://remotexs.cu.ac.bd

The terminal will pause and output a message like this:
To authenticate, visit: https://remotexs.cu.ac.bd/oidc/register/mkey:95de2f531f9e22d5babb17029926b6b1c9884efa48e7edba97d84282c21fac5e

Step 3: Authenticate

1. Copy that link from your terminal window.
2. Open your web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc.).
3. Paste the link into the address bar and hit Enter.
4. A browser window will automatically open, prompting you to log in.
5. Sign in using your authorized Google Account.
6. Once authenticated, you will see a success message, and the Tailscale application will turn on.

Step 4: Enable the Exit Node (Crucial for Library Access)

Simply connecting to Tailscale is not enough to access library resources; you must route your traffic through the campus exit node.
1. Locate the Tailscale icon in your system tray (bottom-right corner on Windows near the clock, or top menu bar on macOS).
2. Right-click (or click) the icon.
3. Hover over Exit Nodes and select remotexs.
4. Ensure Allow LAN Access is checked if you want to keep accessing local devices (like a home printer) while connected.

đź“‘ How to Verify It Is Working

Before navigating to research databases, verify that your traffic is successfully tunneling through the university.
1. Open a browser on your PC or phone and go to whatismyip.com.
2. Look at the IPv4 address displayed. It should explicitly show the university’s IP: 103.94.129.9.
3. Navigate to a book or journal database (e.g., ieeexplore.ieee.org).
4. Look at the institutional branding banner at the top of the website. It should read: “Access provided by: University of Chittagong”.

đź’ˇ Best Practices & Troubleshooting

• Disconnect when finished: Running an exit node routes all your video streams, downloads, and general browsing through the university network. To preserve campus bandwidth, turn off the Exit Node or disconnect Tailscale when you are finished with your research.
• Internet drops after selecting Exit Node: If your internet connection stops completely when selecting remotexs, the server’s internal traffic routing may have stalled. Disconnect and reconnect the Tailscale client on your device.Â
